Is yoga an effective method of detoxification? It may be, but it may depend on what you want to detoxify. While it makes sense that yoga asana practice could detoxify the physical body, there actually are no scientific studies that prove that. But the main toxin for the yogi is avidya-misperception of the true nature of the self.

There is so much in and about our body that we are not aware of. So much that our body does naturally, without our conscious effort. But are the brain waves and breaths we unconsciously follow the best things for us? Turns out that the way you breathe could be stressing you out. And while the ocean waves, cool vibes and amazing body workers in Sayulilta can help you destress and breathe deeper, wouldn't it be great to know how to do it for yourself?!

Arriving early to the airport in Puerto Vallarta we decided to relax outside for a while and enjoy the warmth of the sun before it was time to get in line for our flight to Chicago.  We knew all too well that the next 7 days were going to produce little sunshine, strong winds and temperatures that make you curse.  What we weren't ready for was the harsh reality of the whole situation.

Teaching class every morning, I have had the pleasure of meeting a lot of people – local, visitor and visiting local (those who visit often and/or frequent enough that they feel local). Today I’d like to introduce you to a couple of visiting locals. They are a wonderful addition to town and soon to your belly and waistline. Confused?... Let me explain. Val & Doug came to class like many sweet pale Northerners - with a smile, motivation and a little sunburn. We were soon to learn, they are hardly ordinary. Val & Doug inspire change, openness and discipline.

As the days in Sayulita get hotter, and the evenings longer, morning training makes more and more sense. Not only do you get to earn your margaritas for the day, but you also earn your siesta at the same time!

All over our town, people are ambling about. Rounded forward, misaligned, just letting their body walk. Are your body mechanics causing your neck, back or knee pain? Did you ever consider your posture or gait? How your feet hit the ground? Where your head and shoulders are placed?

Spring is gently coming to life - and with it, a call for a subtle change in lifestyle as our bodies and minds adjust to a kinder environment. We see our beautiful Sayulita full of flowers, birds, warmer nights and more nightlife than during the winter.
As the seasons change, our bodies require a different diet and lifestyle to stay balanced. Mind-body awareness techniques, such as yoga, help us to naturally want to make such changes.

Two weeks ago we asked, “who makes the best Sayulita Smoothie”? Several of you questioned our definition of what we consider “best.”  Was it taste first, nutritional benefits second, or the other way around? Good question.

Ayurveda, the ancient Hindu science of health and medicine. [Sanskrit āyurvedaḥ : āyuḥ , life, health + vedaḥ, knowledge) individually focuses on achieving optimal health in body, mind and spirit, based on who we are and what we're made of. Ayurveda says that just as no two people are alike, no two treatments for health are alike either, and we are all made up of unique proportions of Vata, Pitta and Kapha, the three doshas.

You've finished your Power Ropes workout, surf session, or Zumba class, and you're ready to relax and recover.  Enjoy; you've earned it.  But before you drift off into a Sayulita siesta, it is crucial to refuel your body with the nutrients it needs to repair from the work you just put it through.

Walking along the Sayulita beach on the north end near the big rocks, it's easy to find, from time to time, a couple people doing gentle movements, like a slow and conscious dance. I was practicing Tai Chi myself one evening when a group of children behind me looked at me with astonishment and copied my movements almost naturally ..... we were doing Tai Chi.

You surf, swim, run, lift, press, and pull. It sounds sensible that 2 hours of exercise is better than 1. That 7 days of training is better than 6. So you do it, and you’re feeling on top of the world. Then one day your shoulder starts to hurt a little. Next it’s your knees.

A plateau is not just a flat piece of land. It is also that place in the fitness world where our bodies stop producing results. You’re still sweating, still trying to eat well, and still motivated to change your physique, but your body has stopped “shaping up”! What’s that all about?

All around the world and especially here in Sayulaita, everyone has their own idea of what yoga is; some believe it may be an Eastern religion, while others see it as a strenuous workout. According to Hindu legend, the appearance of Yoga on Earth occurred when a fish (Mat-sya, hence the name Matsyendrasana for the position of the fish) appeared while the god Shiva taught his wife Parvati yoga exercises. The fish mimicked Parvati and while practicing the exercises became a man.

Three Fitness Myths whose time has come to say goodbye:

Myth #1 – Spot Training

SPOT TRAINING DOESN'T WORK. By doing a specific exercise for a specific area of the body (can you say Abs and Thighs?) does not make fat suddenly disappear from that area. Fat is lost over time by burning more calories than the body consumes on a regular basis.

What is it about those food cravings? Unfortunately, we don’t usually crave broccoli or spinach. It is high-calorie, high-fat foods like chocolate, cookies & potato chips that call to us.
