Interview with Hector Piña Ortega, Sayulita's Town Delegate

Where are you from and when did you first come to Sayulita? I was born in Tepic March 3rd, 1975 but I grew up in Compostela. I've also lived in La Peñita but I moved to Sayulita in 2001.

¿De donde es usted y cuando llego a Sayulita? Nací en Tepic el 3 de marzo, 1975, crecí en Compostela y también viví un tiempo en La Peñita pero me mude a Sayulita en el 2001.

Information about your family? I live in Sayulita with my wife, Claudia Guadalupe Altamirano Orozco and we have three children, Jordan, Hector and Luis Mario.

¿Información de su familia? Vivo en Sayulita con mi esposa, Claudia Guadalupe Altamirano Orozco y tenemos tres hijos, Jordan, Hector y Luis Mario.

What is your education and work history? I studied law in Tepic at the Universidad Autonoma de Narayit and I did my social service for two years in the public ministry at the rehabilitation center at Nayarit's penitentiary. My family owned a hardware store in La Peñita where I worked for years in the family business. I then opened the hardware store here in Sayulita, Ferreteria Materiales Sayulita, located on the north end of Sayulita on Calle Miramar.

¿Cual es su educación e historia laboral? Estudie derecho en Tepic en la Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit y presente mi servicio social durante dos años en la agencia del ministerio público en el centro de rehabilitación penitenciario. Mi familia tenía una ferretería en La Piñita donde trabajaba durante unos años con mi familia. Luego abrí la ferretería y Materiales Sayulita, ubicada en el lado norte de Sayulita en Calle Miramar.

What made you decide to run for Town Delegate this year? I saw a lot of needs the town had and changes that needed to be made. I had ideas to help the town grow and promote tourism within Sayulita.

¿Porque quiso ser delegado del pueblo este año? Vi muchas necesidades en el pueblo y quería hacer cambios. Tuve ideas de ayudar que el pueblo creciera de forma positiva implementando un modulo de turismo.

What would you like to achieve during your term as Town Delegate? There are many projects in the works currently. Some of my goals include re-opening the Casa de Cultura and using this space as community center. Sayulita's low season is very long and we are planning to eliminate the low season by organizing events during the summer months. This program is called "Vivo Sayulita". I would also like to eradicate the lack of security in Sayulita and help to keep Sayulita safe and clean and to make it a multicultural tourist destination.

¿Cuales son unos de sus metas que quiere lograr durante el plazo de delegado? Hay muchos proyectos que ya estamos realizando. Mis metas incluyen abrir la casa de cultura, utilizando este espacio para la comunidad. La temporada baja de Sayulita es muy larga y estamos planeando eventos en verano para eliminar la temporada baja. Este programa se llama "Vivo Sayulita". También quiero erradicar la inseguridad de Sayulita y ayudar a mantener Sayulita limpio y seguro convirtiéndolo en un destino pluricultural.

How do you hope to implement these goals in Sayulita? With the support of the entire community, locals and foreigners, together with the municipality, we hope to achieve all of our goals over the next three years.

¿Como espera ejecutar estas metas en Sayulita? Con el apoyo de toda la comunidad, los locales y los extranjeros, junto con el ayuntamiento del municipio esperamos lograr nuestras metas durante los próximos tres años.

How do you imagine Sayulita in the future? I imagine Sayulita will continue to grow and more infrastructure will be implemented into the town. Sayulita has now been named one of Nayarit's "Magical Towns," which means more improvements will come. It was an honor for me to be elected as Town Delegate and I've decided to accept the challenge in changing the image of delegate and making a positive change optimizing the resources available. I welcome all residents to come to our new delegation office located on Calle Miramar.

¿Como imagina Sayulita en el futuro? Me imagino que Sayulita seguirá creciendo con más infraestructura en el pueblo. Sayulita ahora es denominado como uno de los pueblos mágicos de Nayarit, lo cual significa mas mejorías para la comunidad. Fue para mi un honor recibir el nombramiento de delegado del pueblo y ahora he decidido aceptarlo con el propósito de cambiar la imagen de un delegado, haciendo el cambio positivo optimizando los recursos disponibles. Doy la bienvenida a cualquier residente de Sayulita que pase a la nueva delegacion ubicada en Calle Miramar.
