Interview with Jose Lorenzo Enciso

Where were you born and how old are you?
I was born right here in Sayulita; I've lived in Sayulita my entire life and I am 37 years old.

Naci aquí en Sayulita, he vivido aquí toda mi vida y tengo 37 años.

Family information?
I'm single and I come from a large family. I have four sisters, Ana, Lety, Alma and Marlena, and two brothers, Gustavo and Raul. Everyone was born and raised here in Sayulita and all of my siblings are still living here. My father has passed away but my mother still lives here. She was born in San Juan de Abajo but came to live in Sayulita when she was young.

Soy soltero y vengo de una familia grande. Tengo cuatro hermanas, Ana, Lety, Alma y Marlena, y dos hermanos, Gustavo y Raul. Todos nacieron aquí en Sayulita y siguen viviendo aquí. Mi papá se murió pero mi mamá sigue viviendo aquí también. Ella es de San Juan de Abajo pero llegó a vivir en Sayulita cuando era joven.

Work information?
I've been fishing in Sayulita my entire life. I used to fish with my father when I was very young. I began going out to fish when I was seven years old. I remember that whenever there was no school, or during holidays, I would be able to go out and fish. I worked in Costa Azul in San Pancho as a captain of the fishing tours for tourists. This year I've started my own business called Sayulita José fishing tours. All year round there are fish in Sayulita, so people really enjoy the tours as there are always fish to be caught.

He ido de pesca toda la vida. Pescaba con mi papá cuando era niño. Empecé a pescar a los siete años. Me acuerdo que cuando no había clases o durante los días festivos, iba a pescar. Trabajé un tiempo en Costa Azul en San Pancho como capitán de los tours de pesca llevando turistas a pescar. Este año empecé mi propio negocio que se llama Sayulita José y hago tours de pesca. Todo el año hay peces en el mar, así que la gente disfruta de los tours porque siempre sacamos pescado.

What kind of fish are in our waters in Sayulita?
All kinds of fish and fish of all sizes. There are Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Red Snapper and Whahoo among many different kinds of fish. One of my favorites is Whahoo.

¿Qué tipo de pescado hay en Sayulita?
Todo tipo de pescado y todos de diferentes tamaños. Hay marlin, dorado, huachinango y whahoo entre muchos diferentes tipos de pescado. Uno de mis favoritos es el whahoo.

What are some major changes you have seen in Sayulita over the years?
Technology has changed greatly here in Sayulita. Sayulita is more modernized with better services and facilities, better roads and access highways to town. There are more opportunities for everyone. Many years ago the only occupation was fishing or construction work; now there are jobs in tourism, hotels and restaurants and people can open their own business in Sayulita.

¿Cuáles son unos cambios que has visto en Sayulita durante los años?
La tecnología y modernidad ha cambiado mucho con mejores servicios en el pueblo y acceso en carreteras al pueblo. Hay más oportunidades para todos ahora. Me acuerdo que hace mucho sólo había trabajo para los pescadores y los albañiles y ahora hay trabajos en turismo, hoteles, restaurantes y la gente puede iniciar sus propios negocios.

What do you think still needs improvement in Sayulita?
Many things still need improvement, such as the town politics and governing of Sayulita. I think the security of the town needs improvement as well, now that it is growing quickly and many new people are discovering the town.

¿Qu,é es lo que crees que todavía falta por mejorar en Sayulita?
Muchas cosas necesitan mejorar en el pueblo, como las políticas. Creo que también hay que mejorar la seguridad del pueblo, ahora que está creciendo rápido y mucha nueva gente llega a conocer Sayulita.

What do you like best about Sayulita?
I like our beaches, the people in the community and how many of the locals are still family related and put family first. I believe Sayulita is a united town and improvements will be made in the future.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de Sayulita?
Me gustan las playas y la gente de la comunidad y que los locales todavía consideran la familia lo mas importante. Creo que Sayulita es un pueblo unido y que en el futuro va a mejorar.
