Our First Nominating Committee

In previous years, some of us would return to Sayulita by early December and begin our Wednesday meetings.  But with the Annual Meetiing scheduled for early January, we'd be panicked about finding volunteers to serve on the board and trying to come up with a slate of candidates.  It proved hard because we'd also be getting programs off the ground, especially planning for our annual Fiesta-Fundraiser. To make matters worse, not all volunteers would be back in town.  It was not the best way to run the ship.

After our past highly successful Fiesta, and after I made enough "noise" to suggest that three years serving as president was enough, Sam Pottinger came to me and suggested that he could form a nominating committee.  He thought that everyone was in town, everyone was feeling great about GPS and we didn't have the same pressure that we'd have trying to rush the process in December.

In addition, it was time to re-examine the voting procedures and how best to structure the GPS board.  In fact, we discovered that no one had ever translated the by-laws.  Once translated, we found out that there's a lot of updating that needs to be done.  (The board will undertake that work and hopefully have it ready to submit to the voting members next January.)

The committee was joined by Bern Schynder (co-chair), Janet Moeller, Audrey Royem, Will Estes and Scattie McGrath.  While the nature of its work is strictly advisory, because it's up to the voting members to nominate and vote in the board, I'm sure their recommendations will be considered carefully.

Not only did I endorse the idea right away, I thought it was the most important project to come forward for GPS.  Not only was the mission of the committee to find candidates, but in reality, it influences the future direction of GPS for the next few years.  As part of their work, they also wanted to research the history of GPS and to look into the existing committees and present goals.  They gave a summary of their findings at our last Wednesday meeting on April 25 and it was included in the minutes of that meeting (on our web site).

I'll discuss later my personal views for GPS's goals and directions, but I can tell you now that it has a lot to do with finding the permanent solutions for Sayulita's many needs, and to support those efforts.

I, and other board members, remain in office until next January.  This allows time to work with candidates and to help with a smooth transition.  And I must admit, as much as I think experience counts, turnover is usually the best thing for an organization; sometimes the most responsible thing to do is to step away and allow new ideas to emerge from new people or from current volunteers in new positions.

Many thanks to Sam and the committee.  I hope they will stimulate even more volunteers to come forward and take active roles next year.

Nuestro Primer Comité que Nombra

En años anteriores, algunos de nosotros regresaríamos a Sayulita por diciembre temprano y empezaríamos nuestras reuniones del miércoles.
