Belem & Yahel

One of my favorite spots, and the focus of this issue's entry, is a restaurant that opened this season, "YAH-YAH".  When I came here in October, Yah-Yah Cafe was in the final stages of preparing to open.  Run by two amazing people, the restaurant is slowly but surely becoming one of the fixtures on the plaza here in Sayulita.

I have often said that part of the joy to "discovering" Sayulita is in the people you meet, and that holds true here.  Belem (Christmas Bread, Bread of Life) was born on December 25th, and has a smile and mannerism that makes you feel comfortable from the moment you meet her.  Yahel (Sent from God), friendly and outgoing, is her husband and business partner, and is the perfect match for Belem. It is a small wonder that they would open a business one door down from the iglesia.

Belem
YAH-YAH is not their first restaurant.  They had a restaurant in Veracruz before deciding that Sayulita offered more of what they were looking for.  Belem was looking for more "pace and opportunity to do things" and Yahel was looking for more of an international clientele.  In her spare time, Belem likes to teach English to native born children at a school outside of San Pancho.  She is also constantly making time in the kitchen to try new recipes, and to perfect old ones.  Yahel, on the other hand, likes ask people where they are from and their occupation.  He then tries to imagine them in their jobs and in a part of the world he can only imagine for now.  I must admit that it is quite fascinating to see some of these "important businessmen" down here with their shirts and shoes off, walking around totally unstressed.  These two are a couple full of energy, imagination, love of life, love for each other, optimism, and love of people in general.

Like most successful cooks, Belem learned a lot about cooking and baking from her "abuelita" (grandmother) and her "madre" (mother).   Belem learned a lot from her family, but, that wasn't enough for what this new-age couple wanted to do with their new restaurant. The two turned to a source of knowledge I would not have thought of: the Internet. They would watch YouTube entries for certain recipes, read recipes online, and then experiment with their own versions of those recipes. Experimentation has paid off.   Belem and Yahel have found what they were looking for in a location, and we have been blessed with a restaurant that is well-run by a couple who love what they are doing; and who share their love with us through the food they serve.

Sayulita Es Para Todos:  Entrevista Con Belem y Yahel
