Why We Need to Support the Community Police Program

Sayulita is such a friendly, popular destination, with so much going for it, that no one wants to talk about crime.  If we have as many tourists visiting Sayuita as I suspect, we probably have a very low rate of tourist crime.  Even so, whatever rate we do have could be reduced by 75% overnight, if every rental owner would take a few precautionary steps. But in the end, in addition to all that, we need to encourage the government to maintain a full team of police patrolling the entire town.

Last year, wanting to do something before the problem got out of hand, Grupo Pro Sayulita organized the Community Police Program.  Its chief aim was to increase the number of police patrolling the town.  At that time, the federal government had a program where organizations/towns/resorts could hire active "Federal" police to patrol a given area.  In anticipation for that, we needed to also supply ATV vehicles, office space, communications equipment and so forth.  Our call for funding raised $40,000 rather quickly and we completed all the infrastrcture requirements. Then the Mexican elections delayed implementation of the hiring, and eventually, that program ended.  However, the good news for us was that because we had the infrastructure in place, more police were assigned to Sayulita - and we didn't have to pay for their salaries!  In my opinion, we are still short of what we need, but at least we were able to maintain the basic force and then increase their number soon after we had everything in place.

Our Police funds will keep the existing police in operation for several more months, but we'll need more soon enough.  If you, as homeowners, believe we need to keep crime rate down, please do renew your annual (or do it monthly) contribution to the police fund.  It's easy- just go to our web site, www.ProSayulita.org and click on the Community Police Program.  I hope I don't have to point out the consequences if we don't continue with this effort.

Por qué es necesario apoyar el programa de policia en Sayulita
